Ask The Expert: Marques Ogden

You’ve played in the NFL, owned your own businesses, and worked with some big names in various industries like JP Morgan, Home Depot, and the U.S. Military. What are some core lessons on leadership you have learned?

I have learned that servant leadership is the best way to lead any type of organizational team or company. Of course there are times in crisis/crucial situations that you might have to be a little more assertive as a leader, but for the majority of the time you should be a servant leader, who serves the team you are leading. By acting in this manner and doing the actions and not just talking words, you give your team the best chance to succeed!

Can you share an example in your own life of how the Success Cycle helped you find success?

In my own life “The Success Cycle” played a pivotal role in me getting my life back on track, when I had my life changing moment. After experiencing my life changing moment, I came home and I put “The Success Cycle” into action. I had AMBITION to write down the goals I wanted to achieve. I was DRIVEN to be successful no matter who doubted me. I was willing to do the HARD WORK that was required to make my vision a reality.

What is your definition of resilience and inspired this definition?

Resilience is when you get up off the canvas after life knocks you on your butt! This definition was inspired after I filed my chapter 7 bankruptcy and was knocked down on the canvas by life and the mistakes I made! Once I was able to bounce back after the hard times I faced, I found out what the word resilience truly meant.

How do you see accountability playing a role in leadership?

Accountability plays a role in leadership for one main reason… You have to be accountable to the team you are serving as a leader! If you don’t have any accountability with the team you are serving, you are setting yourself up for a culture that people will always blame each other, when times get difficult.

What does it take to become a successful business leader?

It takes 3 things to become a successful business leader… Championship Mindset, Relentless Desire, Refusal To Be Phased By Rejection.

When it comes to leadership and success, what would you say is the one core factor for business leaders today and why?

I would say that the main thing that is needed for a business leader to achieve success is ACCOUNTABILITY. If you have that running through your veins, you can always achieve success!
